New housing scheme ‘putting a gun” to tenants heads

purchase scheme which came into force at the beginning of the year has been roundly criticised by members of Mayo County Council. A number of changes have been introduced with the main ones being that the scheme will only apply to new build homes from now on only for new tenants, and that existing tenants can have only a two year window to purchase their current homes. Once that two year period is over, if they want to get involved in the scheme they will have to move to a new build home, which may be nowhere near where they currently live.

New multi-sports facility mooted for Belmullet

The news of a potential new outdoor multi sports facility in Belmullet was greeted warmly by the members of the Belmullet electoral area committee this week. “We have identified the potential of having a multi sports facility at the civic centre in Belmullet,” senior staff officer for Mayo County Council Padraig Brogan told the meeting. “We are looking at developing it along with the Erris No Name Club who have been very active in the area over the past number of years and have won a lot of awards for their work. The cost of the facility would be in the region of €180,000 and we are working in conjunction with them to apply for funding. We are ready to go to part eight on this, but it all depends on funding to make it possible.” Mr Brogan said the outdoor multi sports facility will also have a roof to help protect it from the elements, and it will be located on the site of the civic centre beside the play ground and tennis court that exist on the site already.

Newport Harbour bye-laws fall between two stools

It was a tale of two electoral areas at the Belmullet electoral area meeting this week, with the new Newport harbour bye-laws being placed as an item on the agenda for the meeting of the north Mayo councillors. Following the redrawing of the electoral areas in Mayo prior to last June’s local elections, the village of Newport was spilt in two with the bridge being the dividing line between the Westport area and the newly extended Belmullet area.

Flashing signs and spotlights on badly damaged N59

The elected members of Mayo County Council for the Belmullet area expressed their outrage at the condition of the N59 from Belmullet to Castlebar at a meeting of the electoral area committee this week, after they were informed that the NRA had requested a report on the damage caused to the N59 during the spell of freezing weather. “I’m dismayed, I don’t know where to start or finish,” Fine Gael Councillor Gerry Coyle told the meeting. “I was out on that road the last day and there are flashing signs warning people of potholes ahead and spotlights pointing at nothing, they’re not pointing at the potholes. Between Bangor and Belmullet there are potholes that you would need a lifeguard on because they are so big. You have to have an NCT for your car, but you could leave the house and your car would be fine for the NCT, but when you get to Ballina it wouldn’t pass because of the potholes you’ve hit. I want to know how much these lights and signs are costing.”
